WE ARE THE Landscaping EXPERts

Sydney Landscapers Who Build Outdoor Spaces That Actually Last

Your property deserves more than a quick fix. Master Groups is a full-service landscaping company in Sydney that designs, builds, and finishes residential and commercial landscapes — from bare dirt to a space you’ll use every single week.

Most landscaping jobs fail in one of three places: poor drainage, wrong plant selection for Sydney’s soil, or a builder who disappears after day one. We solve all three.

What We Do

Sydney Landscaping Services, Start to Finish

We don’t subcontract the hard parts. Every project below is handled by our own licensed team.

Landscape Design & Planning

Every project starts with a site visit. We assess:

  • Soil type (Sydney sits on sandstone in the east, clay-heavy shale in the west — each demands different drainage, footings, and plant choices)
  • Sun mapping across your block throughout the day
  • Council DA and CDC requirements specific to your LGA
  • How you actually want to use the space — not just how it looks in a render

You get a scaled design with materials, costings, and a build timeline before any work starts.

  • Soft Landscaping — Gardens, Turf & Planting
  • Hard Landscaping — The Structure That Holds Everything Together
  • Outdoor Living Spaces — Decking, Pergolas, Fire Pits, Water falls, Outdoor Kitchens  & Pool Surrounds
  • Commercial Landscaping — Strata Committees, Property Managers and  Developers across our service areas.
OUR EXPERT TEAM

Premier Landscaping Specialists

Whether you’re planning a full backyard upgrade or need reliable ongoing landscape maintenance, we approach every project with practicality, transparency, and attention to detail.

Artificial turf installation with black underlay and gravel base in a backyard at sydney north shore by master groups

The right turf laid correctly establishes faster, lasts longer, and looks better.

Not all turf suits every Sydney property. A grass variety that thrives in full sun on a western Sydney block can struggle in the dappled shade of a north shore garden. Getting the selection right before installation is the decision that determines how your lawn performs for the next decade.

We install both natural and synthetic turf, and we’ll tell you honestly which suits your situation based on sun exposure, water access, foot traffic, and how much upkeep you want.

For natural turf, ground preparation is everything: soil amendment, levelling, and drainage correction before a single roll is laid. Turf put down on poor, compacted, or inadequately drained ground establishes slowly and deteriorates fast regardless of the variety.

Synthetic turf is installed with proper sub-base compaction, drainage cells where required, and quality infill — so it performs, drains, and looks right for years.

What we install: Sir Walter · Sapphire · TifTuf · Kikuyu · Premium synthetic turf

Mulch And Soil Services

Most landscaping problems start underground. So does the solution.

In Sydney, soil quality varies sharply by suburb. Heavy clay in the west shrinks in summer and swells in winter, damaging root systems and causing soil movement under hard surfaces. Sandy soils near the coast drain too fast, leaving plants stressed between waterings. Neither is ideal without intervention.

We assess and amend soil before any planting begins — adding organic matter, adjusting pH, and improving structure so plants establish strong root systems rather than struggling from day one. The difference in plant performance between amended and untreated soil is visible within a single growing season.

Mulching is applied after soil preparation across all garden beds: regulating soil temperature, retaining moisture through Sydney’s dry summers, suppressing weed germination, and giving beds a clean, finished appearance. We specify mulch type by application — fine bark for formal beds, coarser woodchip in larger naturalistic areas.

Soil and mulch work is the most cost-effective investment in the long-term performance of your garden.

What we supply and install: Soil testing · Amendment and conditioning · Organic matter · Fine and coarse mulch

A deck built correctly is a safe, permanent part of your home. One built poorly is a liability.

Decking is consistently one of the most-requested additions to Sydney homes — and one of the most variable in quality. The difference between a deck that lasts 25 years and one that softens, moves, or fails within five is almost entirely in what happens before the boards go down: the bearer sizing, joist spacing, drainage consideration under the frame, and fastener specification for the timber species used.

We construct timber decks in Merbau and Spotted Gum — species with proven durability in Sydney’s climate — and composite decking for clients who want a lower-maintenance alternative that won’t need oiling, won’t cup, and won’t fade in the coastal UV. Both are valid choices with real differences we explain clearly before you decide.

Pergolas are designed to complement the deck structure and the home’s roofline, not sit awkwardly beside it. Council and CDC requirements for attached structures are navigated as part of our service.

What we build: Hardwood decking · Composite decking · Freestanding pergolas · Attached pergolas · Integrated seating

Mowing Services

Consistent mowing isn’t just about appearance — it’s about lawn health.

How a lawn is mowed matters as much as how often. Cutting too short stresses grass roots. Cutting at the wrong time of year weakens turf going into summer or winter. Using a blunt blade tears rather than cuts, leaving grass vulnerable to disease. These are the details that separate a professional mowing service from someone with a mower.

We provide regular mowing for residential and commercial properties across Sydney, adjusting cut height and frequency based on grass type, season, and current weather conditions. During Sydney’s hot, dry summers, we raise cutting heights to protect soil moisture and reduce heat stress on turf.

Each visit includes edge trimming, blow-down of hard surfaces, and clipping removal where required. For ongoing maintenance clients, we set a schedule and stick to it — so your lawn stays consistent, not just presentable after a visit.

What we cover: Residential lawns · Commercial grounds · Edge trimming · Seasonal scheduling · Clipping removal

Paving Services

Flat, stable, and draining correctly — the standard every paving job should meet.

Paving fails for one reason more than any other: inadequate base preparation. If the sub-base isn’t compacted properly, if falls aren’t set for drainage, or if the wrong bedding material is used for the pavers selected, the surface will move, crack, or pool water — usually within the first two years.

We install paving for driveways, patios, pool surrounds, and outdoor entertaining areas across Sydney. Every job starts below ground: excavation to the correct depth, compacted road base, appropriate falls away from structures, and edge restraints to hold everything in place.

Material selection is specific to the application. Porcelain for low-maintenance entertaining areas. Natural sandstone for period homes. Exposed aggregate for driveways needing grip. We advise on what suits your home, your use case, and your long-term maintenance preferences.

The visible finish is the last five per cent. The work underneath is what makes it last.

Garden & Landscaping Design

A design that works with your property — not against it.

Good garden design starts with questions, not plant lists. How do you want to use the space? Where does the morning sun sit? What’s the soil doing — draining freely or holding water? What does the rest of the house look like, and does the garden need to connect to it?

We develop garden designs that are grounded in your property’s actual conditions: aspect, soil type, drainage, privacy requirements, and how much time you’re genuinely willing to spend maintaining it. Designs that look good on paper but demand constant attention don’t serve you — so we don’t offer them.

Planting selections are specific to your site’s sun, shade, and soil — not a standard palette applied to every project. Hardscaping layout, garden bed placement, and plant structure are designed together so the finished result reads as one cohesive space.

We produce scaled drawings with materials, finishes, and planting specifications so there’s no ambiguity when construction begins.

What we deliver: Concept plans · Scaled construction drawings · Planting schedules · Material specifications

Hardscaping

The bones of your outdoor space — built to last.

Hardscaping is everything non-living in your landscape: paving, retaining walls, steps, decking, and outdoor structures. These elements give your garden shape, function, and somewhere to actually be.

In Sydney, where sloped blocks and unstable soil are common, hardscaping isn’t optional — it’s foundational. The difference between a job done right and one done cheap shows up within the first wet season: cracking, movement, and water sitting where it shouldn’t.

We build hardscaping with proper base preparation, engineered drainage, and materials suited to Sydney’s conditions. Every element is designed to hold its position, shed water correctly, and look as good in ten years as it does on day one.

Well-planned hardscaping also cuts your garden maintenance significantly — less lawn to mow, fewer weeds to pull, more space to enjoy.

What we build: Paving · Retaining walls · Steps · Decking · Driveways · Outdoor structures

Outdoor Living Spaces

Your backyard should work as hard as your indoor rooms.

An outdoor living space done well adds a full room to your home — one that gets used year-round, not just on Christmas Day. Done poorly, it becomes an expensive area you avoid because it’s too hot, poorly built, or awkward to use.

We design and build outdoor spaces that fit how you actually live: whether that’s a covered entertaining area for hosting, a shaded retreat for quiet afternoons, or a multi-functional zone for kids, cooking, and relaxing.

Every project is planned around your block’s aspect, prevailing breezes, and the way sun moves across your property across Sydney’s four very different seasons. We handle the structural, drainage, and council compliance requirements so nothing gets missed.

Pergolas, decking, outdoor kitchens, fire features, and seating walls — all designed together so the space feels considered, not assembled piece by piece.

What we build: Pergolas · Alfresco areas · Outdoor kitchens · Fire features · Seating walls · Shade structures

Irrigation & Drainage

Water going where it should — and none going where it shouldn’t.

Poor drainage is the most common cause of landscaping failure in Sydney. Water pooling near structures causes soil movement, plant death, and long-term damage to paving and walls. An irrigation system that overwaters is barely better — it wastes money and weakens root systems.

We design and install irrigation and drainage solutions that treat water as the variable it is in Sydney: too much in winter, not enough in summer, and always subject to Sydney Water’s current restrictions.

Irrigation systems are tailored by zone — drip lines for garden beds, pop-up rotors for turf areas — so each part of your garden receives the right volume at the right frequency. Drainage work includes surface grading, agricultural drains, channel drains, and stormwater connection where required.

Getting water management right at the build stage saves significant money on repairs and replanting later.

Retaining Walls & Structural work

Engineered to hold. Built to look like they were always there.

A retaining wall is one of the most structurally demanding elements in residential landscaping. It holds soil under load, manages hydrostatic pressure behind it, and must do both for decades without moving. A wall built without proper engineering, drainage, or footings will fail — it’s not a matter of if.

In Sydney, retaining walls are also a regulatory matter. Under NSW building regulations, walls over 600mm typically require engineering certification. We manage this from the start so your project is compliant and your wall is safe.

We construct retaining walls in concrete sleepers, sandstone, blockwork, and timber — each material selected for the load requirements, aesthetic, and site conditions. Drainage behind every wall is non-negotiable on our projects.

Many of our walls incorporate steps, garden beds, and seating to make them a feature of the landscape rather than a purely functional barrier.

Pathways

A well-built path does more than point you in the right direction.

Pathways define how a garden is moved through and experienced. They link areas together, break up large lawn expanses, and give a landscape visual structure. A good path also does practical work — keeping foot traffic off grass, reducing mud in winter, and improving accessibility across the property.

In Sydney, clay soils in the west and sandy soils near the coast both cause base movement if pathways aren’t prepared correctly. We excavate, compact, and build with appropriate sub-bases and edging so surfaces stay flat and stable over time.

We work with natural stone, concrete pavers, decomposed granite, exposed aggregate, and gravel — each with honest trade-offs in cost, maintenance, and appearance. For paths around pools, we specify non-slip finishes as standard.

Width, gradient, lighting allowances, and drainage all factor into pathway design before a single paver is laid.

Water Features

Movement and sound change the way a garden feels.

A well-placed water feature shifts a garden from visual to sensory. The sound of moving water masks traffic noise, creates a point of calm, and makes smaller outdoor spaces feel complete. It’s one of the few landscaping elements that changes the atmosphere of a space, not just the appearance.

We design and install ponds, wall fountains, cascades, and freestanding water features sized and styled to suit your garden — not oversized showpieces that overwhelm a small courtyard or undersized additions that get lost in a large landscape.

Every water feature installation includes proper waterproofing, a filtration system appropriate to the scale, and electrical planning that meets Australian standards. We also walk you through ongoing maintenance requirements before any work starts — water features need care, and you should know exactly what that involves.

We don’t install water features that are harder to maintain than they’re worth.

What we install: Ponds · Wall fountains · Cascades · Pondless water features · Filtration systems

Got Questions?

Frequently Asked Questions

It depends entirely on scope. A basic courtyard garden with paving might start from $8,000–$15,000. A full backyard transformation with retaining walls, decking, planting, and irrigation typically ranges from $25,000 to $80,000+. We provide exact quotes — not ranges — after a site visit.

For planting and garden beds, generally no. For structures like retaining walls over 600mm, pergolas, decks above a certain height, or work near boundaries, you may need a Complying Development Certificate (CDC) or a full Development Application (DA). We advise you on this during the consultation.

Small projects: 1–2 weeks. Mid-range backyard renovations: 3–6 weeks. Large or multi-stage builds: 6–12 weeks. Weather, council approval timelines, and material lead times can shift these windows. We give you a realistic schedule, not an optimistic one.

A landscape designer creates the plan. A landscaper builds it. Master Groups does both — design and construction — which eliminates the miscommunication that happens when two separate companies interpret the same drawing differently.

Yes. We hold the relevant NSW licences for the structural and building work we perform. We carry public liability insurance and workers’ compensation coverage. We’re happy to provide documentation before work begins — and you should ask any landscaper for this.

A backyard landscaping Sydney project can include a wide range of elements depending on your goals. This may involve turf installation, paving, decking, retaining walls, garden bed construction, irrigation systems, outdoor lighting, and entertainment areas such as pergolas or fire pits. We begin by understanding how you want to use the space and then design around functionality, flow, and long-term maintenance. Every backyard landscaping Sydney project is customised to suit the property’s size, layout, and lifestyle requirements rather than following a generic template.

Yes, we provide both residential landscaping Sydney services for homeowners and commercial landscaping Sydney solutions for businesses, strata properties, and developments. Residential projects often focus on lifestyle, entertainment, and personal preferences, while commercial landscaping prioritises durability, safety, and professional presentation. Our team has experience working across both sectors, ensuring each project is designed appropriately for its environment and long-term use.
